The New York Transit Museum’s Subway Sleuths Program will soon begin its 4th year! This innovative program, for students on the Autism spectrum and students diagnosed with social/communication disorders, uses content about the New York City subway to practice and promote social engagement, collaboration, and problem solving. The 10-week program takes place at the New York Transit Museum in downtown Brooklyn (corner of Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street). Groups are now forming for the Fall 2013 semester. To form our Subway Sleuths groups, expert facilitators observe students in a fun half-hour session. The goal of the observation session is to create groups of students who share similar social and communication profiles so that they will be productive and have fun together throughout the course of the semester. This unique 10-week program is specifically designed for children on the spectrum WHO HAVE A PASSION FOR TRAINS AND TRANSIT. Sessions are facilitated by a special needs educator and a speech-language pathologist, both trained in ASD support, and a Transit Museum educator. The program uses children’s interest in transit to help them navigate social experiences with peers. $350 for all 10 sessions. Scholarships available.
