This year though, on the 30th anniversary of her assassination, when you might have expected the commemorations to be particularly full-bodied, the specter of Mrs. Gandhi appeared diminished. In her place, politicians from the newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party and the media have installed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, another much-less talked about Congress party leader, who was born on Oct. 31. 1875. A close confidant of Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the “iron man of India,” Mr. Patel served as India’s first home minister.
