The Nightwishes Part 1 “Out of the car!” A voice yelled, Britt couldn’t see beyond the light attached the rifle of the man holding it. It was too bright to predict who the man was. But soon enough, more of them jumped out of their vehicle. There were at least four of them, “Out! Now!” He yelled as he nudged his rifle in Britt’s direction. Britt had no choice as James, Raven and Skyson had already stepped out. She looked around at her companions who already had their hands up but she refused to. She knew who they were dealing with. “You! Hands up!” The man with the rifle pointed his flashlight in her face. Soon enough, he was in her face, the rifle pointed at Britt’s nose. But Britt wasn’t having it. “Britt! Hands up,” Skyson calmly told her with a look of concern. But Britt wasn’t much for listening. She knocked her elbow into the man’s arm, making him let go of the rifle which flew above their heads. She pulled his arm, moving him towards her, and that’s when she kicked him square in the neck, the impact dislocated the man’s shoulder. As he collapsed, Britt caught the rifle by the handle as it fell onto her hand. She pointed the light on the rifle at the man, who was on his back, holding onto his arm in pain. His face was scrunched up in it. That feeling of causing someone else pain. Cruel, but she loved it. Skyson and the others look at her with surprise. “Damn,” James murmured, “I didn’t know she could do that!” Skyson caught his mouth open in shock as he closed it again. Britt kneeled down at the man, now whimpering in pain. “See how disrespectful it is? To yell at me like that? Pointing this damned thing in my face?” She brandished the rifle in his face, he turned his head away in fear of it. “Not so strong now, are we?” She mused, “Stop!” A man’s voice yelled, Britt knew the voice. She could swear she knew it. The voice brought back memories. And suddenly she got it. The leader of the Nightwishes. River Gonzales. “Hey, baby!” River yelled out as if nothing ever happened, walking towards her as if he only saw her yesterday. As if he’d forgotten he’s sold her. Britt stood, watching River near her. He was so close that all Britt could see were his eyes. The same eyes she used to trust. But now all she wants to do was gouge them out of his head. “Hey, babe.” He repeated but in a whisper, River caressed her jaw and her cheeks, but Britt didn’t avoid it. Not that she had already forgiven him, but because she could take advantage of it. She had always been his weakness. And right now, it was best to stay smart. Kill later. His hand traced the back of her head now, getting his fingers entrapped in her hair as he kissed her. Britt didn’t protest, but she did keep her eyes open. She matched the intensity of River’s kiss. The better she acted, the more River would believe a lie. And she was doing very well. It was ridiculous, Britt couldn’t believe how she’d fallen in love with him before death happened. Now here he was, kissing her, as if he had already been forgiven. Britt had to stop her thoughts before she could bash River’s head into their vehicle’s hood. River must’ve been in the zone, because he wouldn’t stop. The sick bastard, Britt thought. Soon she felt River’s arm around her waist, and the other trying to take the rifle from her. But she didn’t give him that opportunity, so she put her arms around his neck instead, her hand still clasping the rifle. Britt put her forehead on River’s to stop him. Enough was enough. The more it happened the sicker she got. She pretended to be in love, breathing the way you did after a kiss, but she just couldn’t look into his eyes. Not anymore. She saw her blood in those eyes and she didn’t want to see them anymore. His eyes were never the same. Not after everything. Finally, he let go of her, he even held onto her hand before he strode away, smiling. “This is great.” River said with a nod. Britt didn’t know why, but she felt Skyson’s stare on her. As she looked to him, she almost felt like she needed to shrug, create and excuse for herself, but she only looked back at him defiantly. “This is great!” River exasperated as he came back, now with two boys following behind him that were armed with rifles. She knew exactly who they were. Jake and Callum. The boys. She felt her heart melt. She ran past River and enclosed the both in a hug. They weren’t related, but Britt almost cried. Jake and Callum, the bodyguards appointed to her before she was sold. The only two people who tried to help her escape. As Britt pulled out of the hug, she puzzled at the bandanas hanging over their mouths. Britt felt her heart drop. She held Callum’s face as she slowly removed the red bandana. The boys couldn’t speak. Then she remembered. Callum’s mouth was still there, so were his lips, but his tongue. Britt felt her throat jump as she couldn’t have possibly imagined the pain they both went through. The Nightwish punishment. The cutting of tongues. It was her fault. Britt couldn’t look into the boys’ eyes, but this time, she didn’t want them to see hers. She slowly crouched down and put the side of her fists on her eyes. But she felt Jake’s and Callum’s hands on her shoulders, telling her to stand up even though she could never hear their voices again. As she stood, he gave their hands a tight squeeze. “Hey, who are they?” River asked as he put his hand on Britt’s waist, nodding towards Skyson with squinted jealous eyes. “They’re of no value.” Britt muttered near River’s ear. A lie, but she sounded convincing. “They’re my captives.” She gave River a glance that he found to be very seducing. “Alright, then,” He smiled, eyeing Britt up and down. She felt sick just standing there. Being the object of the sick bastard’s affection. Love? There was none, all it was was lust. There was no way in hell that Britt would allow herself to be touched. “Hold on,” She gave River a wink as she departed from him, the cold wind comforted her as she marched up to Skyson, finally she could breathe. But there was something she had to do that would confuse her group. She reared her fist back and struck Skyson’s jaw. Skyson toppled backwards, holding onto his jaw, trying to get some feeling back into it. His lip bled just as Britt’s knuckles turned from black to blue. She ignored the pain and moved her lips to Skyson’s ear and whispered, “Just play along.” She stood and this time, kicked Skyson in the stomach. Skyson rolled with a yell of pain. Britt couldn’t tell if he was really in pain or was just acting as good as she was. “What the hell are you doing?!” James yelled from behind her. She acted quickly before James could deal her damage. She twirled around and hit James’ jaw with a Roundhouse. He spins onto the dirt, blood spewing from his nose and lip. Britt grunted for effect, shooting the two girls with threatening stares. It was better if they backed off rather than give them bloody noses too. Britt turned around and crouched down, taking Skyson’s wrists and holding them together tightly. “Just play along,” Britt whispered again as she felt River’s stare from afar. “I’ll make sure you all get food and supplies. Just follow my lead.” She whispered to him, desperately wishing he was listening. Skyson coughed, blood from his mouth tossed into the dirt. “Boy, you sure can hit.” Skyson said, Britt smiled, “Told you I could take care of myself.” She said, River tossed thick rope in Britt’s direction. She held her hand out and caught it and got to tying down Skyson’s hand behind his back. “Don’t worry, he can’t kill you without my say so.” “How are you sure?” Skyson coughed again, he could hardly feel any of his fingers, and his sight was blurred. “Because,” Britt said, “Women still have control over their men.” She said with a smirk. “Up on your feet.” She said, Skyson stood with surprising strength as Britt led him to the Nightwishes’ vehicle. Britt passed Skyson on to Jake and Callum. She gave Callum’s palm a stroke with her middle finger. A code for “This is a trick.” Britt watched as Jake and Callum sit Skyson down up front in the first vehicle with them. “Take the others!” She ordered, she could feel River attracted to it. Her power over everyone. She was back in business. “You heard her!” River called out to his other cronies, “Tie ‘em up. We’re taking them to camp.” Britt felt uneasy and stiff as River slid his nose and lips up and down her neck, whispering, “I’m glad you’re back.” Britt forced herself to touch his face in response, but inside she was disgusted. “Yeah,” She muttered, “Me too.” River reached down and held her hands. Used to be a sweet gesture. Now it was nothing. “Come on,” He said, holding Britt’s hand as they both made their way to his second vehicle. “Oh! And, uh . . .” He looked behind him at one of his fallen mercenaries. The one Britt had incapacitated. “Pick him up.” River ordered to the others as soon as they were done. Britt sat in with River, feeling unsafe and exposed. But she regained comfort as she caught Jake and Callum’s eyes looking back at her from their car, Skyson sitting beside them. With the two of them, she knew she was safe. But no way was she letting them get punished again. She vowed to repay their deeds with freedom. She promised.
