The Noer/Milorganite® Image Collection Launches! The Turfgrass - TopicsExpress

The Noer/Milorganite® Image Collection Launches! The Turfgrass Information Center is pleased to announce the soft launch of the Noer/Milorganite® Image Collection. Widely known as the “Noer slides”, these images were primarily shot by O. J. Noer, and later Charlie Wilson, Jim Latham, and others as a “use” collection. This collection was heavily utilized by Noer and others throughout the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s in support of Milorganite’s Turf Service Bureau on the lecture and consulting circuit. Despite this, the condition of the materials is generally good! The scope of locations and content is extraordinary, ranging from turf experimental plots, to golf courses and athletic fields throughout North America; equipment, personalities, maintenance practices, disease and pest control, and fertilization issues are all featured. This collection contains photographic materials shot from the 1920s through to the 1980s, containing nearly 27,000 items total – 12,902 of which are available to view now. Currently, nearly all available images are glass-mounted slides, though the collection also contains some cardboard-mounted slides, negatives, positives, and 8 and 16 mm films. All the (unbroken) slides with ledger data have been scanned, and the data entered, though the data has not been fully “standardized”, as the information comes from hand-written ledgers and any notes written on the mount of each slide.) Browsing is available by Year or Location. We will continue to refine and improve both the data and the interface based on feedback and time. Several new features are under development, such as the ability to exclude plot images from results in the search interface. Click the image’s corresponding link in the “More Detail” column to get the full record display to see everything we know about the image. At this time, this content is not retrievable from within the TGIF database itself. We aim to have more concrete data before that integrated availability. We hope that users of the material will help us to identify unknown people, places, equipment, weeds, or whatever is of interest in the items! Please use the feedback link within to email us what you see, and then we will incorporate that back into the data. Please note: 1. that any commercial and non-commercial third-party use of images from the collection outside of the Michigan State University Libraries or its electronic presence, unless otherwise specified, shall carry the credit acknowledgement of: Courtesy of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and Michigan State University Turfgrass Information Center 2. Web-grade .jpg images are available for non-commercial educational and research purposes only. Commercial use outside of the Michigan State University Libraries is prohibited unless prior written approval is obtained from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District: contact jstaufe@mmsd. 3. For publication-grade commercial use and licensed reproduction use (i.e. enlargements, posters, etc.), including reproduction fee, see: [detail to follow]. Our special thanks to the O. J. Noer Research Foundation and the Wisconsin Golf Course Superintendents Association (WGCSA) for their lead efforts on fund-raising this project. Our appreciation goes to all supporters of this project; it has been and will continue to be slower to progress than hoped, but as of now, users can see what an amazing resource this can be for the industry – and beyond!
