The Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) has banned the sale of electric shock products used as for pranks as they can be dangerous to children and people with heart problems. OCPB secretary-general Jirachai Moontongroi said on Sunday that there are a variety of products, such as chewing gum, pens, car alarm keys and electrical switches. Samples of these items were sent to a laboratory at Chulalongkorn Universitys Electrical Engineering Department for inspection. The study results found that they produced a maximum of 500 to 1,000 volts of electricity, he said. These products, when triggered, can send electricity to different organs of the body in a continuous and steady manner. They can cause a person to pass out and burn the skin, he added. OCPB member Somsak Sarakarn said retailers may face five years in prison and/or a 500,000 baht fine if they still sell them. As for those who manufacture or export them, they may face 10 years in jail and/or a one million baht fine, he said.
