The Oklahoma State University Foundation has established a Masonic Chair with research focused on men and gender roles. This chair was made possible by a $500,000 endowment gift from the Masonic Charity Foundation made in 2008. Please see the press release below. We are excited to see the product of this research! PRESS RELEASE: OSU Announces First Masonic Chair Recipient; Research focuses on men and gender roles Carolyn Henry, professor in Human Development and Family Science in the College of Human Sciences at Oklahoma State University, has been recommended, pending Board approval on March 7, 2014, to serve as the inaugural Masonic Chair. The university-wide endowed chair, made possible through the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma, focuses on the importance of men, masculinity, gender roles and politics. “The inaugural Masonic Chair application review was very challenging, as the competition garnered outstanding nominations from nearly all of the disciplinary colleges. We were delighted with the response to this new initiative and Professor Carolyn Henry’s record of accomplishments, scholarly contributions and future research proposal,” Dr. Sheryl Tucker, Associate Provost for Graduate Education, said. During the three-year term as the Masonic Chair, Henry will utilize the endowed chair funds for graduate student and research support. A faculty member at OSU since 1988, she plans to build upon a 30-year legacy of research which includes among other topics fathers’ and mothers’ parenting and adolescent competence. For her term as the Masonic Chair, Henry plans two primary goals: supporting and disseminating research on fathering and creating opportunities to stimulate university-wide involvement in men’s studies. She hopes to establish a distinguished lecture series, as well as a grant program for graduate students conducting research in men’s studies. “Professor Henry’s research prospectus was particularly compelling because it incorporated many great opportunities for our students, campus and community to engage in the broad scholarly area of men’s studies,” said Tucker. During her three-decade tenure at OSU, Henry has taught multiple graduate and undergraduate courses related to family dynamics, theory and therapy. She serves as a faculty mentor to master’s and doctoral students in the College of Human Sciences, and has been recognized by the OSU Regents with both the Distinguished Research Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award. Henry serves as a member of the Board of National Council on Family Relations, and on the editorial board for multiple peer-reviewed journals in the field of family science. The Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma is the primary charitable and educational organization of Oklahoma Freemasonry. The foundation supports many programs throughout the state, including the Oklahoma Senior Assistance Program, Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, and the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority. The foundation also maintains its Matching Funds program which doubles funds raised by local Masonic Lodges for charitable and educational needs in their areas. Henry was honored at the university-wide Medallion Ceremony on Friday, February 28.
