The One-Armed Bandit to challenge Woodlands golfers, Sept 22 #thewoodlandscup #thewoodlands THE WOODLANDS (August 22, 2014) – At the inaugural Woodlands Cup Golf Tournament Monday, Sept. 22 at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center Panther Trails Golf Course, golfers will have a chance to challenge The “One-Armed Bandit” – Larry Alford. The Woodlands native was a ranked sixteenth in the American Junior Golf Associations national listing and had just succeeded in fulfilling one of his goals by winning the prestigious Houston Golf Association Tournament of Champions when he lost his arm in an automobile accident. Larry suffered extensive injuries that included a broken back, collapsed lung, blood clots in his right arm that nearly dictated a double amputation, total destruction of facial structure, and major head trauma. After spending over a month in ICU, Larrys patience, persistence, and positive attitude allowed him to become victorious again both on and off the golf course. “I am ecstatic about this opportunity,” said Alford. “The only reason I am where I am today is because several organizations in The Woodlands had faith in me after my accident. They provided funds to help me after I had lost all of my golfing scholarships. Without their generosity, I could not have continued my dream to play college golf. Words can’t explain what it means to me to be able to pay it forward.” The One-Armed Bandit will be located on the 17th hole, raising donations to benefit the scholarship fund. Players will challenge The Bandit to a closest-to-the-pin contest with a chance to win various prizes. Scrap Yard Sports is the Title Sponsor for the event and co-founder Bryan Beaty feels The Woodlands Cup Tournament is coming about just at the right time. In October we will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of The Woodlands and its perfect timing that there is a golf tournament that brings together all the Village Associations in a combined effort to raise money for scholarships. We are happy to be the Title Sponsor for this tournament and to be part of the glue that brings all the Villages together for good. Sponsorships and golfing spots are still available. The last day to sign up for either is Sept. 8.Proceeds from The Woodlands Cup will benefit the village associations’ scholarships and charities.
