The Orchard Theatre Show Review: by Joanne Harrison - Chinn & Chapmans Blockbuster The Musical, Tuesday 16 - Saturday 20 September 2014. As the long awaited show begins, the stage lights up and features the multi talented Band playing a toe tapping showcase of the musical talents of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, a promising start to the new production of Blockbuster The Musical premiering at Dartfords Orchard Theatre last night. Mickey Block, played by Aaron Sidwell, starts the show by busking in Leicester Square tube station with Claire (Carla Nella) and unveils an amazing singing talent which literally blows you away. He has a remarkable voice which just captures your interest instantly and gets you jigging in your seat. From then on however, the story seems to be a little fragmented and tends to flow more when introducing the next hit Chinnichap song. The musical talents of all the cast are flawless and the music is represented seamlessly but the story line it followed didnt quite do it justice. The production is essentially what you would imagine from a musical Back to the Future with the undertones of a youthful Grease performance set in the 70s. Of course if you loved these classic films this production is for you. Lots of quirky one liners, amusing scenes and a few romantic interludes to keep you entertained; and if you didnt focus too much on the narrative, the cast performed faultlessly with equally perfect choreography by Rebecca Howell. Suzanne Shaw, playing Carol, and Sidwell, rock the Ballroom Blitz in the second act and this is followed by equally high end vocals from Louise English (Alice), Aimie Atkinson (Teresa), Lee Honey-Jones (Willy) and Micha Richardson (Jodie). There is no denying that the singing talents of all the Cast are absolutely genuine and these talented characters were cast well. The intended story line is completely eclipsed by the performing talents of the company. The multi talented characters in this production make this a very easy and entertaining show to watch and the performers pull out all the stops to make this a musical masterpiece. By the end of the night everyone was out of their chairs giving a standing ovation, dancing in the aisles to a re-cap of all the songs which were showcased.
