The Oscars Will Be Handed Out This Sunday All eyes will be on Hollywood this Sunday, when the 86th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre at #Hollywood & Highland Center. #EllenDeGeneres will host the ceremony, which will air live from coast to coast on ABC. The networks coverage will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern time and 4 p.m. Pacific time, with red carpet interviews. If you cant get to a TV on Sunday night, the ceremony will be streamed live on Oscar, ABC, and the Watch ABC app. Gravity and American Hustle both have a leading 10 nominations. 12 Years a Slave has nine nominations. All three films are contenders for the best picture Oscar. There are a total of nine nominees in the Academys top category this year. The others are Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, Philomena and The Wolf of Wall Street. Tom ONeil, of the award show-centric website Gold Derby, says there may be an upset in the best picture race because of the Academys preferential ballot system. Under the system, voters rank the films in order of preference, one through nine. For what its worth, 12 Years a Slave received the Golden Globe in January for best motion picture – drama, while American Hustle won the equivalent award in the comedy/musical category. The best actor race may well come down to Matthew McConaughey, whos nominated for his role in Dallas Buyers Club as an electrician and rodeo cowboy in the 1980s who has HIV, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was the lead in 12 Years a Slave. Their competition includes Christian Bale, whos up for American Hustle; Bruce Dern, who earned his nod for Nebraska; and The Wolf of Wall Streets Leonardo DiCaprio. Cate Blanchett is considered to be the front-runner for the best actress Oscar, for her performance as a suddenly-broke widower in the Woody Allen movie Blue Jasmine. The rest of the field consists of American Hustles Amy Adams, Gravitys Sandra Bullock, Philomenas Judi Dench, and August: Osage Countys Meryl Streep. Actor/rock musician Jared Leto has received kudos this award season for playing a transgendered woman in Dallas Buyers Club. Hes up for best supporting actor, as are newcomer Barkhad Abdi of Captain Phillips, American Hustles Bradley Cooper, 12 Years a Slaves Michael Fassbender, and The Wolf of Wall Streets Jonah Hill. Eighty-four-year-old Nebraska star June Squibb will make Oscar history if she wins the best supporting actress category. Shed become the oldest winner in any of the acting categories. She opposes American Hustles Jennifer Lawrence, 12 Years a Slaves Lupita Nyongo, August: Osage Countys Julia Roberts and Blue Jasmines Sally Hawkins. Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón is a strong bet to claim the best director Oscar after winning the top prize at the Directors Guild of America Awards in January. Only seven times since the DGA Awards began in 1948 has the feature film winner not gone on to win an Academy Award the same year. The other nominees are David O. Russell, for American Hustle; Alexander Payne, for Nebraska; Steve McQueen, for 12 Years a Slave; and Martin Scorsese, for The Wolf of Wall Street. Bette Midler and Pink are expected to perform at the Oscars ceremony. In addition, the telecast will feature performances by the best original song nominees, including U2. The list of presenters includes Lawrence, McConaughey, Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Christoph Waltz, Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and many, many more. After the ceremony, Jimmy Kimmel will host his annual post-Oscars edition of his ABC late-night show. Kevin Spacey will be his guest; there will also be appearances from DeGeneres, Streep, Scorsese, Tom Hanks and more.
