The Panama Canal officially turned 100 this year, and although the media focus has been on the technological feat, the country was changed forever in major ways since the early 1900s. Socially, it became more ethnically and economically diverse. Culturally, it became bilingual. Politically, it fell under the complex influences of the USA. Environmentally, it has been the worst disaster in terms of marine, flora, fauna and human casualties as it has altered the global ecosystem by joining the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans and the hundreds of thousands of lives lost as a result of careless construction practices and mixing of incompatible species. Further innovations in science and technology will be needed to mitigate further damage... if possible. Hail to the Panamanians of Jamaican and Barbadian ancestry! RIP to the ancestor diggers who lost their lives without compensation to our families.
