The Pastors Heart 10/31/2014 Football season is in full swing! One interesting thing about the season is the annual battles between arch-rivals. Emotions run high and fans are a little more fanatic as local and even state teams play for what they call bragging rights. Basically bragging rights is the opportunity to lift up your team as the better one, at least until the next time you face that rival. In the book of Galatians, Paul was writing to deal with a group that claimed bragging rights for all they had done to gain Gods favor and earn their salvation. They lifted their team up as superior because of their legalistic adherence to the law of Moses. Paul himself had been a part of that group and had believed that he had a large share of those bragging rights himself. But one day Paul met Jesus and realized that all he had done and all he had been was certainly nothing to brag about. By grace he had been saved, and by grace he was living for his Lord. All he could say was this, But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world (Galatians 6:14). The word glory in that verse means to vaunt or boast. In other words, Paul was saying that the only thing he dared brag about was what Jesus Christ had done for him on the cross. Only Christ is worthy to be lifted up. Only because of Christ do we have any hope. Only by Christ can we claim to be anything. So when you hear about those rivalry games and braggin rights this season (Go Dawgs!), be reminded of your great Savior and the importance of lifting Him up in all you think, say, and do. Take some time to brag on Jesus!
