The Peacekeeper will be kept, Bailey said, but the department does - TopicsExpress

The Peacekeeper will be kept, Bailey said, but the department does not plan to retain another vehicle, its fully-tracked M-113 personnel carrier. The 12-ton M-113 was an Army mainstay since the Vietnam War, but the sheriffs department does not have a transporter for it. Both vehicles were obtained from the federal Department of Defense. The new vehicle would be used by a Regional Response Team that serves nine counties in emergency situations, said sheriffs Sgt. Ron Bush. Not every county has an armored vehicle at its disposal. The sheriffs department received 80 percent of the funding for the armored vehicle from federal Homeland Security. The 20 percent local match was provided with drug forfeiture money and the countys public safety property tax millage. Over the past decade the federal government has provided the sheriffs department with more than $4 million in Homeland Security funding for equipment and training.
