The Pick This Week: I was thinking that I should find a video that talks about the Founding fathers of this great nation and then I thought I wanted some humour in it as well and then, since this is the week after the Oscars, I wanted to find something about the Oscar awards, the night that shows off the glitz and glamour of the wonderful yearly celebration of great performances, both on and off the screen. The one video that brings all of it together (oh yes, it does) is this acceptance speech for the Best Actor Oscar award given to Tom Hanks for his magnificent performance in the movie, Philadelphia. If you have not watched this movie, it is high time you saw the masterpiece that will shake you to your core. The movie rises high on the wings of great performances by Antonio Banderas, Denzel Washington and of course, Tom Hanks. He mentions Rita Hanks in a soft, special moment but remembers to call out the great performances by Antonio and Denzel because without them, he could not have delivered the powerful portrayal that gave him the Oscar. He then delves into the theme of the movie and blends it with real life to tell us people of daily life who make the movie not fiction but the crushing truth of life...and above all, he brings it all together to the great minds that were our founding fathers of this great nation as they laid the foundation for not just a powerful nation but also became the guiding light for an informed people who would make up for the greatest democracy in the world. To say it all within a small speech when you have just been told that you are the best (and he is the best) is an extremely difficult task...but Tom Hanks does it with grace, with effortless ease and it leaves us humbled, energized and inspired moment.
