The Post-Holiday Blues...are as familiar as the common cold. You may wonder why so many suicides, homicides, domestic crises, and depressive episodes occur during a time when were SUPPOSED to be happy, joyous and filled with mirth? For a little while, the partying, cheer, cooking, guests, toys, glitz and glitter may distract us from the politics, threats of war, racial tensions, economic challenges, hardships and general mayhem of the world around us. Of course we also endure the typical blah-blah-blah New Years resolutions: lose that weight, workout, eat right, stop smoking, spend more QUALITY time with the family, etc.,only to CRASH a short time following the rush, and end up with the inevitable, sinking feeling of another year of let-downs and self-disappointment. REALITY hits many of us like a ton of bricks! Dr. Andrew DuBrin, a professor of management at RIT, points out that, A blank calendar means, literally, a clean slate! If you continue to look back at the past year, or the past days, you may end up in a downward spiral. Why not INTENTIONALLY think of something positive THIS VERY MINUTE?! I often suggest that folks get more mileage out of the simple things of life if they DWELL on daily, positive experiences. A bagel and a coffee, a compliment, a beautiful scene, the blessing of health-or healing, to name but a few of the plethora of little blessings we experience each and every day-if we pay attention. In addition, be aware that small, daily steps are much more effective, in most cases, than grand schemes. Instead of vowing to workout for HOURS daily, why not break down this or other goals into bite sized actions that are SUSTAINABLE? Take it all one-step-at-a-time, whatever your goals may be. Its usually a good idea to simplify, and build on SMALLER, doable goals this year-creating good habits ONE AT A TIME. Dont bite off more than you can choose. ;-) DrBobDeYoung
