The Power of Wait a Minute Have you ever been scorched by a critical email? Have you ever felt like sending one? Of course you have. Did this move you closer or further away from your goal? Seldom is it a good idea to send critical emails. Leave out the all-caps. It’s just like yelling at someone. An email lives forever. Tone is often misunderstood. With 90% of communication being nonverbal, all of that is lost. Go ahead and write your first reaction. Don’t send it, unless you just send it to yourself. Imagine one of the like to receive that email from someone else. Would it move you closer to that person, or just build feelings of animosity? Instead, write email invite the person to have a conversation. It’s okay to name the topic. That’s just a good step in not blindsiding someone and good conflict resolution. Sometimes our first reaction isn’t necessarily one that allows us to put our best foot forward.
