********** The Power of a Whisper ********** Experienced classroom teachers have long known that a whisper is the most effective way to regain the attention of an unruly class. Why? When someone whispers we listen closely because we think that otherwise we may miss hearing something important. The whisper is powerful also because it is the voice of intimacy. Spouses in an intimate setting do not need to shout or even to speak in normal tones. A whisper is sufficient for sharing thoughts and feelings intended for no ones ears but their own. God loves the soft hush of a whispered voice. In fact, it is His preferred method of speaking, particularly to His children; all who share an intimate relationship with Him. That is why it is important for us to develop the discipline of silence as part of our worship. Sometimes God speaks to us in a whisper and we must be quiet if we are to hear Him. Once, when God spoke to Elijah, His coming was preceded by a strong wind, an earthquake and a fire, but He was not found in any of these. Afterward, He spoke to Elijah in a “still small voice.” “Be still, and know that I am God.” The prophet Habakkuk declares: “The Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him.” Psalm 46:10 God likes to speak to us in soft tones. It stands to reason then that He prefers us to speak to Him in the same way. When we are on intimate terms with the Lord, there is no need for us to shout. All we have to do is whisper. This is what Jesus had in mind in Matthew chapter 6 when He taught His disciples about prayer. James said, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” And most of that effective prayer rises to the Father through the whispered words of His children spoken from the secret place. Whispered words of intimacy always carry more weight with God then do shouted petitions. The power behind prayer is the power of intimacy. It is the power of a whisper!
