The Premier Opens Student Art Exhibit at AIG The Hon. Michael Dunkley, JP, MP, Premier and Minister of National Security yesterday opened the Bermuda Arts Council (BAC) and AIG student art exhibit in the lobby of the AIG Building. The exhibit features the works of Bermuda Arts Council scholarship and grant recipients Nahshon Hollis, Charles Godet Thomas, Sarai Hinds, Rheas Gibbons, Deondre Cumberbatch and Shanna Hollis. AIG, in partnership with BAC, offered use of their lobby to support and promote these local artists. Following a discussion with BAC and members of the AIG Charity Committee, and in concert with AIG’s global commitment to give back to communities in which it domiciles, AIG made space available for the students to display their work. Premier Dunkley stated, “I commend AIG for creating this wonderful exhibit space for the artists to showcase their work. It is always a pleasure to see corporate and community partnership at work to help support the Arts in Bermuda. Just like AIG, this Government believes that our young people need and deserve our support in whatever career dreams and aspirations they have. And with this space being provided, it will undoubtedly give these artists the boost they need to promote their work. “I’d also like to congratulate the Bermuda Arts Council and their Chair, Ms. Tona Symonds, for securing this opportunity for their student scholarship recipients. This is just another great initiative to further encourage and support these artists. “By way of background, the Bermuda Arts Council (BAC) was founded 1969 with the intent to promote public awareness of the value of arts and its continued development and growth to Bermudian society as it relates to our youth and all residents. “Over the past few years some of the successes that the BAC has accomplished include: Expansion of the Annual Bermuda Arts Council Awards Ceremony which celebrates individuals in the Bermuda arts community with Lifetime Achievement, Founders and Patron Awards. The awarding over $200,000 in student, individual and organizational grants; and Administering the Bermuda Cultural Legacy Fund. “Now, in keeping with our mandate to promote public awareness of the value of arts, the Bermuda Arts Council can add to their list this newly formed partnership with AIG to keep the focus on the Arts.” BAC Chair, Ms Tona Symonds said, “On behalf of the Bermuda Arts Council I would like to congratulate the young artist and wish them well in their future endeavors. We are pleased to partner with AIG to provide this wonderful venue for them to exhibit their art.” Picture #1 Premier Dunkley and Molly Godet (representing her son, Charles Godet Thomas); Nahshon Hollis, Sarai Hines, Anthony Philip, Tona Symonds, BAC Chair; Premier Dunkley; Acting Governor Mrs. Ginny Ferson; Shanna Hollis; Dr. Edwin Smith and Deondre Cumberbatch.
