The RAWR Report: Call to take part in act of remembrance for Anna Politkovskaya / Примите участие в акции памяти Анны Политковской [RU] hro.org/node/20232 [EN] hro.rightsinrussia.info/hro-org/politkovskaya-13 The international human rights organisation Amnesty International calls upon all mass media to support an action in remembrance of Anna Politkovskaya. On 7 October 2014 it will be eight years after the death of Anna Politkovskaya. All these years Amnesty International has been demanding from the Russian authorities an effective investigation into her murder, the punishment of her murderers and of those who ordered the crime as well as to take necessary measures to ensure safe working conditions for Russian journalists. “We think that in all those eight years, the Russian authorities have done almost nothing to protect journalists, even though there has been a verdict in the case of Politkovskayas murder,” Amnesty International told the media portal Lenizdat. In this regard, Amnesty International will hold an international campaign on October 7 to honour the memory of Anna Politkovskaya and to demonstrate the solidarity of the international media community with their Russian counterparts who continue to work under the restrictions of freedom of speech and the lack of protection from the state. We ask all independent news publications around the world to support the action, giving permission for their front pages (or printed screenshots of the front pages of online media) to be folded into paper flowers, which Amnesty International activists will bring on the day of Anna’s death on a commemorative plate to the offices of Novaya gazeta,” the organizers said. “In addition, we would like to ask those publications to write a brief message of solidarity to publish on the websites of Amnesty International and of Novaya gazeta, and, if possible, to place it on their own sites. We believe it is important that this event is attended not only by foreign but also by Russian media outlets, both at the federal and regional levels. We hope that these paper flowers will be a symbol of sincere mutual support and solidarity of journalists.” The well-known journalist and columnist of Novaya gazeta and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead in the elevator of her home in Moscow in October 2006. A jury declared all five defendants who were put on trial guilty. Lomali Gaytukaev and policeman Sergey Khadjikurbanov were identified as organizers of the murder. The jury agreed with the prosecutions case that Rustam Makhmudov was the one who murdered Politkovskaya. Makhmudov’s two brothers were found guilty of complicity. It was Gabriel Makhmudov who delivered the murderer to the crime scene and Ibrahim Makhmudov who warned him of Politkovskaya’s approach to the house. Of all the defendants, only the Ibrahim Makhmudov received a reduced sentence. The person who ordered Politkovskaya’s murder has still not been found.
