The REST of the story: When I left you yesterday, the British were in the middle of bombarding Baltimores Fort McHenry. If they succeed then Americas 3rd largest port city of the day would be captured and burned like the nations capital three weeks prior. As the sun began to rise on the morning of September 14, the fog burned off, and the smoke from the cannons began to clear, Francis Scott Keys heart leapt as he saw the 18 Star/15 Stripe American flag still flying over the fort. His inspirational words live on with us today...200 years to the day...in the words of his poem The Defense of Fort McHenry. The popularity of the poem/song led to a name change to The Star Spangled Banner and in 1931 Congress made it our official National Anthem. Just as Key was inspired 200 years ago, there is still something amazing that happens in our hearts when we look at the symbol of our country. For all of our differences the flag still unites us and reminds us of those before us who lived and died securing the freedoms we share today. I pray that we who are living continue to carry on with the courage of our forefathers to ensure the freedoms and greatness of this nation for future generations. (Yep- Im a history geek!)
