The RIOZOO Foundation opened in September 2004, the catwalk Fauna, the Zoo expansion project consisting of an area of 22 thousand square meters, open to the public. The new space starts gathering deer, tapirs, capybaras, emus, aquatic animals, turtles and seabirds. Walking on the catwalk, visitors have a privileged view and a safe proximity of animals, without interfering in their habits. The animals are housed in environments close to the natural habitat, which gives them a better quality of life and well-being. The expansion area also houses the core of exposure and environmental education of the TAMAR Project, which is dedicated to the preservation of several species of sea turtles within a national impact project that has the support of PETROBRAS and IBAMA. It is the first unit of the project with no direct connection to the sea and the only exhibition center in the state of Rio de Janeiro
