The Rabbid is a New Zealand woman based in Seattle. She submitted to Three Words and I find her comics to be truly beautiful ugly bewildering amusing and powerful. inflatedmythmaking.tumblr/ All I know about her is what she told us in her email. She said she can draw but chooses to work in this style because its more self-deprecating. Because she said this I began to think about her work as heta-uma or good-skilled. According to artist King Terrys epic manifesto, heta-uma represents the pinnacle of manga. It is a style beyond good or technical skill, more a kind of soulfull ugly, fully cognizant of both the artists truth & the constructed nature of comics (incidently King Terry has a couple of categorys which, in my opinion, reflect the competent boy spectrum - heta-heta (good-good) & uma-heta (bad-good). If you want you can read more about King Terrys ideas here: books.google.co.nz/books?id=Z0yDAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA141&lpg=PA141&ots=5rR36UrcQ5&focus=viewport&dq=heta-uma+philosophy&output=html_text Anyway! The Rabbid is fascinating because hardly any women work in heta-uma (in fact Im struggling to think of any others right now). Her specific heta-uma motivations seem different to King Terrys but they are intellectualised in a similar way. It is a different, more explicitly meta approach to those who work via a compulsion or singular unskilled vision (which lots of women do & which I also think is completely valid) even though the end aesthetic may feel similar. It is exciting to find her!
