The Ralph Diaries NOVEMBER 3 1964- San Antonio- Tuesday- Went to school, T-Bird Hills. Let Renae wear my jacket at recess. Lyndon Johnson (LBJ) beat Barry Goldwater to become President. My dad was happy. 1967- San Antonio- Friday- Dad drove me to school, Holmes. Had 5 tests today. Mrs. Mullins drove me home. Tonight, went to the Homecoming game with Mike, Martin and Dave. We won, 14-3. then we went over to Jims Coffee Shop, saw Sally Burke there. 1968- Chicago- Sunday- Went to catechism class, and mass. Whole family went over to the Duncans house. They gave Jimmy a hamster. We played kickball with the girls. Tonight, listened to the radio, WLS, did my homework. 1970- Lubbock- Tuesday- Went to school, Monterey. Went to Plains Bank and cashed my birthday checks. Today, I registered for the draft (Selective Service System), on 19th St. Got letters from Kim, Olivia and Mike Fischer. (note: Polly now works in that same 19th St. building). 1972- Lubbock- Friday- Went to classes at Texas Tech. Savoy Brown in Odessa tonight. 1973- Lubbock- Saturday- Tech played Rice at 2:00. Went with Tims band, Spellbound, to Lockney for their gig tonight. 1977- Lubbock- Thursday- Delivered papers. My girlfriend, Katherine Hollingsworth, went to see Gino Vanelli tonight. She wouldnt let me go, because I made fun of him. 1983- Lubbock- Thursday- Worked at Univ. store. High Voltage, an AC/DC tribute band, at Fat Dawgs tonight. 1985- Lubbock- Sunday- Todd Rundgren played at the Lindsey Theatre tonight. My sister, Mary, danced on stage. (note: Kyle Abernathie swears I was at this concert, but I wasnt.) 1989- Lubbock- Friday- Worked at Univ. store. Went to Happy Hour, then party at Mark Wombles. Billy Squier playing tonight. 1991- Lubbock- Sunday- Hung around the house with Polly and baby Ali most of the day. Tonight, promoted Teysha at the Iguana Club, nobody came. Also, promoted Blue Oyster Cult at West L.A., did real well. Not the nicest guys, but put on a great show. 1992- Lubbock- Tuesday- Worked at Univ. store. Voted for George Bush (Sr.) in Presidential election, but Bill Clinton won. 1994- Lubbock- Thursday- Worked at Univ. store. Angela Strehli playing tonight. Rolling Stones are in San Antonio. 1995- Lubbock- Friday- Worked at Univ. store. Lane and I promoted Vertical Horizon. 1999- Lubbock- Wednesday- Mr. Garcia came by and covered our pool for the winter. I turned off our water conditioner. Mike Vinson took me to Hong Kong Buffet for a late birthday lunch. Worked out at home. 2000- Lubbock- Friday- Worked at 82nd st. store. Maines Bros. playing tonight. Also, the KA Calf Fry with Willie Nelson, Chris LeDoux and Cooder Graw. 2001- Las Vegas- Saturday- Polly and I in Las Vegas, staying at Treasure Island. Tonight, we went to The Orleans, to see The Righteous Brothers. Great show! Afterwards, I saw Bobby Hatfield in the casino and got his autograph. (note: I was lucky to meet Bobby. He died two years later, almost to the day.) 2004- Lubbock- Wednesday- Worked out at home. Had lunch at Moose Magoos with Mark McKenzie. Met, Ted, my plumber, at my house. Stayed with him till 5:30, then went to work. Worked late, sorting 45s in the back. 2006- Lubbock- Friday- Worked at 82nd st. store. Tonight, Polly and I went to Dinner Club at Mel and Pandys. 2007- Lubbock- Saturday- Polly and I went to some garage sales, then ate at Pei Wei. Then, we loaded up tons of branches at the rent house, in my trailer, and took them to the Recycling Center. Took a nap, while Tech beat Baylor 38-7. Went by my old warehouse, where Andrew did $185, in what was probably our last Saturday Sale. Took a load of stuff to the new warehouse. Started up my riding lawnmower, first time in months. Polly and I went to the Stars n Stripes Drive-In, saw the new Denzel Washington film, American Gangster, was very good flick. 2008- Lubbock- Monday- Had lunch with Mel, Don and Michael at Jasons Deli. Mel bought my lunch for my birthday. Worked at 82nd store with Markham and Pat. Went by Univ. store and paid the guys there. Joey got to practice full-contact football today, first time since his ankle sprain. Called Mr. Garcia to close the pool, says hes retiring. Lisa called, excited about this weekend, in Dallas. Talked to Renae on computer. 2009- Lubbock- Tuesday-Got a nice plant delivered to the store for my birthday. Thought I had a secret admirer. Turned out to be Mark McKenzie (FMX). Thanks, Mark! Polly and I took Joeys Blazer over to Scotts to get new rear-view mirrors and radio installed. Ate dinner at Bighams. (That plant is still alive. McKenzie hasnt spoken to me in about 3 years. Dont know what his problem is.) 2010- Lubbock- Wednesday- Had lunch at Jasons Deli with Michael and Casey Poindexter. Jim Lauder made a surprise visit, dropped by on his way to Vail, Colo. Gave me a packet from Fischer, whom he visited earlier in the day. We had a brewski in my office, gave him the Expansion tour. Decided on the carpet and tile today, from Carpet World. Polly and I ate at Moose Magoos. Its going downhill fast. Took us 45 minutes to get nachos and it was not crowded at all. Business was up a little today. Johnny Greene is in India! 2011- Lubbock- Thursday- Saw Allen Rosens obit in the paper. He owned Flip Side Records. I worked for him the summer of 74. I talked him into letting me run his new store in San Antonio. I drove a huge truck full of racks and inventory down there, stayed with Fischer. Then, I did nothing but paint, sweep and put up with his idiot partner, Gene Goodwin. That was my last stab at moving back to S.A. Anyway, it didnt work out. I told Allen I was going back to school, and quit. His last words to me, were Thanks, Steve!. lol. Had lunch with Eric Sims, at Genghis Grill. We had fun, great food. Busy day at the store. Finally made it out to the warehouse, watered my trees, brought in some records and CDs. I put a bunch of warehouse DVDs on sale for $2 each and they are really selling! Warehouse CDs will be $1 each. 2012- Lubbock- Saturday- Cleaned house. Talked to the pool guy, says he will be out Tuesday. Rodney says he will begin painting our house this week. Lots to do in the next month. Tonight, Polly and I went to Stephanie Stiggins mothers memorial. It was in Johnny Pharrs barn. It was nice, great food! Back to the store for a couple of hours. Watched SNL. Polly lasted about 30 minutes. 2013- Ransom Canyon- Sunday- Looked in the garage, saw that both left tires, on my Expedition, were flat again. Decided to watch football without playing any bets today. I did it! Wasnt quite as much fun, but still enjoyed it. Cowboys beat Vikings, 27-24. Texans lost to Colts, but looked good. They kinda cratered after Coach Kubiak collapsed at halftime. Went to the warehouse, took a truckload of branches from our willow tree, to burn. Too windy to have a fire, though. Watered my trees, picked up my big air compressor. The kids came out this evening for dinner and to celebrate my birthday.
