The Reason to own and Train Your Dog As I sit watching the snow fall silent outside my window and curl my feet in Czar’s coat, memories filter through my mind especially of Tig and the things we had done together. I realize that I am now one that the passing of time has brought the never-ending changes that we observe in every human being. For time is the master that changes our bodies from the activities of youth to the solitude of old age. How many times have I observed an elderly gentleman or lady, sitting in a chair, gazing vacantly into space? I realize that I am not that many years from where they are. How many times have I walked into the room with Tig by my side, and watch dull eyes light up . “Go Visit “ is the soft command given to Tig as we introduce ourselves to our new friend to be. “What breed is he? How many breeds did it take to produce that fellow? He is a fellow, isn’t he?” Well the introductions begins as I present Tig (full title Misty’s Royal Tig-ger Tank), a purebred Bouvier des Flandres. The questions are now non-stop we cover feeding habits, the war, herding, retrieving and dogs they have owned. Thus starts a new friendship that neither time nor man can alter, as my canine’s love is never ending and his heart is as big as all outdoors. Many of my stories are of Tig, Czar like Kazam has been mainly my companion. Tig-ger was a full working dog in AAT therapy How can one furry dog produce results that people try for months to attain? Anyone who has ever has a pet has learned that dogs are always there, if you have put the time and effort into them. Always giving and they do not condemn. The very reason Czar lives with me now and Tig was my constant companion on many visits. The reason people put many dollars into training. It is the same unconditional love I watched time and time again and know I have now. It is watching Tig listens to the same songs every visit with the same interest as the first time, with each visit he is more in tune to what his friend wants and joins in with much enthusiasm. The song – “ Doggy in the Window”, with all the barks in the right spots. The “woof, woof” given each time bring much joy. We were told this lady seldom laughed; yet for Tig the laughter and joy were always there. It was a share time with shared stories. It is a dozen little stories like this. Also an important item on the agenda is that it is touching time. A time when dog owner is forgotten and happy memories return. The dog receives non-stop petting as resident sit silently or talks to a furry friend. That love that is there we cannot describe. Doctors or scientists cannot measure the value and effect on humans. But the impact of such strong love can be felt. Love is an essential ingredient for happiness and contentment. Pets have been known to reduce stress, tension, lower blood pressure and the big one –they relive loneliness. The reason I have always had dogs, as much of my life has been spent by myself for various reasons. The reason I train is the fact that I love a dog that can share my like and that people can enjoy, granted my dog have for the most been big. But that is hardly noticed, you step over them without thinking, they are great for hugging. I have seen many interactions between my dogs and the elderly. As I have stated before, dogs cross barriers that humans cannot. Visit time sees resident sharing stories of former pets or previous visits of regular dog friends. Christmas becomes special as Tig and I visit each home that we pay regular calls to. I realized and remember as the Christmas season approaches how important these visit s had become. In every home Tig would be greeted by name and the number of gifts this four-legged shag rug received was unbelievable. Even for Czar his Christmas card is a video to the ones we love, for although we are miles apart stories of Czar fills my grandchildren lives. Rita Lillico Oct 19,2001
