The Red Sox won the World Series in 2013, and thats about all that - TopicsExpress

The Red Sox won the World Series in 2013, and thats about all that matters when looking back on that season. But the Sox traded shortstop extraordinaire Jose Igelsias at the deadline in deal that got them pitcher Jake Peavy. The righty went 4-1 with a 4.04 ERA over 10 starts with Boston down the stretch. Then through three rounds of the post season, Peavy made three starts, totaling 12.2 innings, posted a 7.11 ERA, walked four and struck out eight. All told, Peavys performance for the Red Sox in 2013 was pretty middling. Iglesias, on the other hand, finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting behind Will Myers. Iglesias is a defensive wizard and it seemed that the Sox might regret trading him for years to come. But suddenly, the Red Sox World Series Championship aside, the trade doesnt look so bad from the Sox perspective. Report on Saturday indicate that Iglesias is expected to miss most of the 2014 season due to a shin injury. This is not a new problem. Iglesias has battled shin splits for years, but is apparently dealing with tibial stress reactions now. While it was initially thought that that Sox sold low on Iglesias and could have, even should have, gotten more, it suddenly appears that they dodged a bullet. Whats more, the Tigers may now be compelled to sign free agent Stephen Drew to man shortstop. If Drew does sign with the Tigers, the Red Sox will receive a supplemental first-round pick with Detroit having to surrender the 23rd pick in the draft. That would be icing on the cake.
