The Remarkable Key to Greatness “At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:1-4). I grew up in the era of Cassius Clay, the world heavyweight boxer later renamed, Mohammed Ali. One thing about him that irked me to the core was the way he would always say, “I am the greatest!” Something about those words made me want to see someone, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, or another boxer, knock his block off. However, nobody did. As much as I hate to admit it, Mohammed Ali was the greatest boxer in his generation…just as he proudly claimed. However, the arrogant machismo that seems to work in the boxing world or among famous athletes, does not fly in the spiritual realm. In fact, Jesus said the claim to greatness would be found in exactly the opposite direction. In the Lord’s sight, true greatness is most revealed by extreme humility. Don’t miss this: Humility is not weakness, it is strength that serves without need for applause. What did Jesus say was the remarkable key to greatness in His kingdom? “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 18:4). To become like a child is to be obedient, not self-aware, not arrogant, not bossy, but to consistently do the will of the Father. Would you be great in His kingdom? Get low before Him, exalt, serve and glorify Him by ministering to others, not in the spotlight, not for recognition, but for Jesus only! Strive to be the greatest in His kingdom today!
