The Rev. Stanley E. Olson, who served as President/Bishop of the Pacific Southwest Synod of the Lutheran Church in America from 1979-1987, passed away on July 2nd in Sacramento, after living with Alzheimer’s disease for a number of years. He was named a Bishop Emeritus of the Sierra Pacific Synod in 1990. Prayers for his wife of 65 years, Mary Lou, and his family, would be appreciated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19th at 11 am at St, John’s Lutheran in Sacramento. The following information was received from Pr. Stan’s daughter, Sara: Arizona facts about my father include that he and my mother met as teenagers when Grace Lutheran was the only Lutheran Church in Phoenix...perhaps Arizona. They were in college and both became charter members of Faith Lutheran, Phoenix, where they were also married. His ordination took place at Grace Phoenix and his first call was the organization of Faith, Yuma. And, of course, Arizona was one of the states in the Pacific Southwest Synod the years he was Bishop. His ties to the Arizona community of faith are strong and long-held. (The Southwest California Synod created a nice insert about my father on their Facebook page.)
