The Ring Movie Review: 7.5/10 Atmospheric in tone and continually freaky in execution this is an above average horror movie that tries its best to steer clear of the usual cliches and instead is always a surprising step above. Director Gore Verbinski does an excellent job at making the movie visually dynamic in wonderfully inventive ways that helps keep the tension and scares flowing without any unnecessary gore or cheesy jump scares. With this style the movie is able to create some very impressive sequences that may not immediately fright but instead slowly disturb. Naomi Watts does great work at giving the story constant emotional believability which makes sure no scenes fall flat no matter how outlandish. The only small issues the movie has is that at times its use of dialogue to explain the story can feel a bit forced instead of feeling honest. But that is truly a minor problem in this truly creepy and exciting horror story that surprises, scares and sticks with you.
