The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office hosts two classes on suspect tactics and perimeter containment. On August 11, 2014, the RCSO held the first of two classes aimed at improving the ability of law enforcement officers to apprehend suspects that flee to avoid apprehension. To provide this training, the RCSO is hosting Jack Schonely, a nationally recognized expert and author of Apprehending Fleeing Suspects: Suspect Tactics and Perimeter Containment as he presents an 8-hour training block that is being held at the Rockdale Career Academy. It is being offered to patrol officers, K-9 handlers, SWAT team members, field supervisors and watch commanders at the RCSO. The training examines tactics currently being used by suspects to avoid capture, suspect hiding locations, safe and effective search techniques, foot pursuit tactics, tactical communication and perimeter containment tactics, as well as “shots fired, officer down” scenarios as they relate to perimeter containment. In a continued effort to work with other agencies to fight crime and apprehend fugitives, the RCSO also invited other local and surrounding agencies. The first class was a resounding success, with 117 attendees. Besides RCSO personnel, other agencies in attendance included Rockdale County 911, National EMS, Conyers Police Department, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Walton County Sheriff’s Office, DeKalb County Police Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Henry County Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service. “I am excited that we are able to host this renowned expert,” said Sheriff Eric J. Levett. “While we have had great success in apprehending fleeing suspects using containment perimeters, there is always room for improvement to ensure we have a high apprehension rate. In addition, by bringing in surrounding departments, the officers and deputies are receiving the same training so that we can all be on the same page. This is part of my continued commitment to the citizens of Rockdale County to provide the best training to the deputies so that we can catch the criminals that try to run from us. We are going to be relentless in our pursuit to apprehend fugitives to make Rockdale County a safer place.” Jack Schonely has been working in law enforcement for over 29 years, having joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1983. During his career, Schonely has participated in over 2,000 perimeter containments, seeing both successes and failures. As a nationally recognized expert in suspect tactics and perimeter containment, he has shared his experiences with thousands of law enforcement officers across the United States and Canada. Schonely received a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and is a certified instructor with the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission, where he was nominated as runner-up for the 2005 Governor’s California POST Instructor of the Year Award. In addition, Schonely is a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) and the Illinois Tactical Officers Association (ITOA). The next training session will be held on August 18, 2014 and an estimated 127 additional law enforcement officers are already registered to attend.
