The Roots – the greatest hip hop band in the world – closed out the Saturday night line-up on the Jimmy Lyons Arena Stage. Prior to Saturday night, the Monterey Jazz Festival audience might have experienced hip-hop inflections in their jazz: Robert Glasper certainly brought healthy helpings to his Friday night set. And audiences might have even seen loud, pumping sousaphone laying the bassline for dance music if they caught the eccentric Red Baraat set Saturday afternoon. But they probably haven’t seen a bona fide hip-hop crew here on the MJF stage. Well, now they have. And their lives will be forever changed.
