The Royal Geographical Society of SA, in conjunction with the State Library and the Friends of the State Library takes pleasure in inviting you to: SAND, STONE AND WATER: SOME LANDMARKS OF OUTBACK EXPLORERS AND SETTLERS Thursday July 25th 2013, 2.00 pm. Hetzel Lecture Theatre, Institute Building State Library of South Australia What the explorers and early pioneers left behind has been a fascination for former librarian Valmai Hankel for much of the last 20 years. Not content with merely reading their accounts, Valmai has travelled widely in South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland, visiting their campsites, noting the trees they blazed, and the relics they left behind. Travelling in the footsteps of the pioneers, Valmai has researched their stories, what brought them there, what they achieved, and how they coped with the tough environment. These are stories of human endeavour, of determination, and discovery. In her “Troopy”, she has been able to travel the same tracks and find the forgotten places. Her passion to find places and understand their stories has taken her to remote Sweers Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. There she found a monument marking the visit by Captain Matthew Flinders in 1802. Her love of our bush heritage has caused her to mourn the loss by fire of the historic 92 year old Burketown Hotel
