The Royal Shakespeare Company’s critically acclaimed production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical has collected awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Gabriel Ebert as Mr Wormwood), Best Book of a Musical (Dennis Kelly), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Rob Howell) and Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Hugh Vanstone) at this year’s Tony® Awards. Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Gregory Doran said: “We are so proud to win an amazing four Tony Awards and for all our Matildas to receive a Tony Honour for Excellence in the Theatre. It’s an honour to be on Broadway and we want to pay tribute to the fantastic American cast and crew who have worked on the show since January and to the incredible response we have had from New York audiences.” The show, with music and lyrics by the anarchic Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, continues to play to packed houses at London’s Cambridge Theatre, where it’s been confirmed that Canadian actor Alex Gaumond (Top Hat, We Will Rock You, Legally Blonde) will join the company in the role of Miss Trunchbull and Kay Murphy (The Tailormade Man, Top Hat, Chicago) will play Mrs Wormwood from 3 September 2013. Haley Flaherty will continue in the role of Miss Honey until 7 September 2014. Further casting will be announced soon. With a total of 24 awards for the London production to date, including 7 Laurence Olivier Awards, over 800,000 people have seen Matilda The Musical in the West End since the show opened in 2011. Alongside the 12 Tony Award nominations, the New York production has collected 20 awards on Broadway so far. Matilda The Musical is currently booking until 25 May 2014.
