The Ruby Dee Davis Memorial Service was one of the most memorable, - TopicsExpress

The Ruby Dee Davis Memorial Service was one of the most memorable, loving, and touching memorials Ive ever attended. Her iconic legacy as a writer/actor/activist, mother, wife, and grandmother were cited with eloquent and loving tributes by her family, daughters Hasna Muhammad and Nora Day Davis, grandchildren and a performance by her son singer Guy Davis. Harry Belafonte delivered the Eulogy via tape, President Obama and Sidney Poitier sent glowing remarks, and there was an incredible Literary Tribute featuring a medley of Poetry & Prose written by Ruby Dee that were read by actresses Tyne Daly, Kim Fields, S. Epatha Merkerson, Phylicia Rashad, Pauletta Washington, Lynn Whitfield, Elizabeth Van Dyke and Susan Taylor read TODAY IS OURS, a piece she didnt write. Guest performers included SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK, Alicia Keys, poet Sonia Sanchez, Wynton Marsalis, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, among others. Big ups to my longtime friend Terrie Williams and her staff who handled PR and organization for the service and did a splendid job. It was truly and honor to attend and pay homage to such a gifted, loved, courageous, historical Black woman who left an indelible mark and imprint on our culture.
