The Russian occupation of Crimea has resurrected Cold War-era concerns about the balance of military power in Europe. Although the American military presence in Europe is smaller than past decades, the military balance strongly favors NATO, says David Shlapak. The Soviet Union once had 100 division to drive into West Germany; todays Russian army boasts about 25 divisions total.
