...The SAGE Of Freewill THE SAGE AND his devotees were attending a conference on acupuncture, where people who were interested in learning the art were asked to stand up. The Sage stood up, and on his heels, followed his devotees. The devotees gleefully filled the register that was passed round. But before it could get to the Sage, the latter was seated. The lady passing the register around stopped to ask: “Sir, have you changed your mind?” “I haven’t,” replied the Sage. “I never felt like learning it.” The lady simply shrugged and moved on. At the end of the lecture, the puzzled devotees walked up to the Wise One and asked him why he stood up only to sit down again when the register had nearly gotten to him. “I only got up to stretch my feet. Claudication was about setting in and so I stood up to relieve tension.” This response brought forth a series of lamentations from the devotees: “We only signed the register because we felt that you had an interest in taking the course. Now we’re saddled with the burden of attending the classes!” The Sage rebuked them promptly: “That is most unbecoming of you! Why then were you given your free will if all you can make of it is to leech on to other people’s decisions, which, however, are born of their own personal experiences and convictions?! It is left to you at all times to personally determine the path you wish to pursue. Remember, the tapestry of your destiny is woven in the loom of your free will! Do not blindly follow me or believe all that I say!- You have a right to question that which you do not understand, and a right to consider issues objectively before coming to your own conclusions! Were I to jump into a lake of fire, would you gladly jump in after me?” The devotees sensed clearly the folly of their reasoning and gladly took note of this error. The Sage thus softened up on them: “Whatever the case may be, no knowledge is lost. Perhaps when you return from your acupuncture lessons, you may wish to share your knowledge with me!”
