The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a internal section of ROM which has a backup copy of certain crucial bits of the OS like the IMEI. During a boot failure, it will automatically restore this information from the backup copy. Some bonehead at Samsung set the ROM so it keeps a dummy IMEI of 0 in the backup, so on a boot failure all your IMEI data over-written with 0...leaving your phone unable to connect to the network. I have not rooted my phone yet, but i am learning about all the things to watch out for. Gonna have to correct that bug before I flashed a custom rom in....
