The San Francisco Examiner is reporting on the recent decision by San Francisco cab drivers to unionize. In an effort to stave off competition from ride sharing companies like Uber and Lyft, San Francisco cab drivers have joined the national alliance of taxi workers. Ross Hyman, from the AFL-CIO, is quoted as follows: the basic story is that regulators have a moral authority to ensure that the taxi drivers are able to make a livable wage,” There in a nutshell is why ALL Americans should favor limited government and fight the administrative state. When state, (or federal) regulators work in favor of one industry or one group of workers, they by definition begin to work AGAINST another industry or group of workers. Additionally, once the state becomes invested in the survival of one industry, they are on tge opposite side of innovation. Finally, what Hyman and others are really talking about is the state bureaucracy keeping the promise that the millions upon millions of dollars spent lobbying the state should pay dividends when the industry is threatened. (See a similar article about the gentrification of San Francisco and how much money it takes to get building plans past the zoning board.) All this does is promote corruption. Of course, the defense is that they are protecting the consumer. Sigh. .. P.S. This should be an object lesson to Uber and Lyft drivers who ate even now, crying out for unionization.
