The San Mig Coffee Mixers and the Meralco Bolts open their Governors’ Cup semifinals series on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum. Game One is set at 6:45 p.m. with both teams looking to draw first blood. Meralco is the fresher team coming into the series, having had three days to rest after dispatching Barako Bull in the quarterfinals last Wednesday. San Mig Coffee, on the other hand, will only have a day to prepare after defeating Alaska last Friday in their own quarterfinals series. But the Mixers will have a big advantage when it comes to experience, as the franchise makes its fifth straight appearance in the semifinals of a PBA tournament — the longest such streak in the league right now. They will be taking on a Bolts squad making its first final four appearance in a PBA tournament in the team’s three-year history. “We’re happy that we’re here, but the task is not yet over,” said Meralco coach Ryang Gregorio. The two franchises have had some history battling each other in the postseason, with San Mig Coffee winning over Meralco in the quarterfinals of the 2010-11 Philippine Cup, the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup, and the 2013 Commissioner’s Cup. Despite their record against the Bolts, San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone remained wary of their opponents. “They’re extremely underrated. Their lineup is really solid,” said Cone.
