The Savior in the Sepulchre John 19:38-42 The burial of Jesus is an important historical and theological fact. Each of the Gospel accounts refer to Jesus burial. Mary and Lazarus anticipated it (12:7), and the apostle Paul defined it as part of the gospel message (1 Cor.15:1-4). Why is something that seems somewhat insignificant mentioned so often in the Bible? Why is Jesus burial so important? First, it is important because it proves He died. A person is not buried without first experiencing physical death. Regardless of what the unbelieving skeptics claim, Jesus Christ died on Calvarys cross. Second, Jesus burial is important because it is an integral part of the picture of Christs work as displayed through the believers water baptism (Rom.6:3-5). Finally, His burial is important because the biblical events surrounding it teach us much about genuine discipleship. Todays text mentions two men-Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus. Joseph was a prominent Pharisee, an extremely wealthy man, and a secret disciple of Jesus (see Lk.23:50-52). Nicodemus, who had once approached Jesus at night, was also a prominent Pharisee and a wealthy man. At one time, he attempted to defend Jesus when the other religious leaders sought to accuse Him (7:50-52). Both men apparently believed in Jesus as the Messiah but were to afraid to identify with Him during His earthly ministry. Only after He died did they openly commit themselves to serving Him. How sad it is to consider the blessings these men forfeited in their lives by refusing to publicly identify with Jesus. Today, many Christians are likewise secret disciples who refuse to visibly commit themselves to the Lords service. What a shame!
