The Scene: Fenway Park in Boston, a spring day, overcast skies, and a chill in the air. The stands were filled with cheering Red Sox fans and a few Baltimore Oriole fans, all enjoying the game. It might have been in the fifth inning when a pitch crossed the plate and the batter drove a low, fast-flying, foul ball over the third base line into section 149, the Loge Box, just infield of third base. The ball was moving so fast that the crowd caught its collective breath, fearing a fan might get Boston-beaned on the noggin. A second later, a fan jumped up with his left hand raised - he caught the burner barehanded. The stadium crowd jumped to its feet and cheered that fan! What a catch! The stadium crowd sat and the game continued. Suddenly, that same fan who moments earlier was a hero, instead of keeping the ball - which is what happens when a ball lands in the stands - threw that same baseball back onto the field, nearly hitting the feet of the pitcher who was in his pre-wind-up. The crowd erupted again, and for a second time, jumped to their feet. This time they booed, then shouted, Throw him out! while a thousand fists with thumbs raised motioned over a thousand shoulders like a thousand umpires indicating, OUT! Toss the bum out! Security arrived and escorted him out. He went from praised hero to a worthless bum in seconds. How quickly a crowd can turn. Lets Pray: Dear God may all of our collective and sober judgments be as apparent, definitive and righteous. Amen. Todays Thought Is: Is the majority always right?
