The School of Ports boasts a Marine Training Department with 85% of its training programmes accredited by South African Maritime Safety Authority. The Port Engineering Training Department supports all eight ports in South Africa together with the Lighthouse Services Department and the Dredging Department. The newly established Commercial Training Department is mandated to support all the non-technical departments of Transnet National Ports Authority. The Quality Assurance Department has established an assessment centre that caters for all areas of learning and development. Its Career Guidance Centre includes a media centre for all employees to access educational material, while its Research and Development function acts as the gatekeeper for all TNPA’s intellectual property. Who can join the School? Most of the courses available at the Transnet School of Ports are open to both TNPA employees as well as external candidates. Certain courses are only open to TNPA candidates, contact the relevant School of Ports representative to find out if you can apply for the course you are interested in. What are the minimum entry requirements? Each School of Ports course has different entry requirements, as these are often job-specific. Please contact the relevant School of Ports representative to find out whether you qualify to apply. The Transnet School of Ports can provide you with a brochure detailing the available courses and entry requirements. How to apply Your application should include the following: • A covering letter outlining your reasons for wanting to go to sea • Curriculum vitae (CV) with your name, date of birth, educational background, etc. • Grade 12 results or if currently completing Grade 12 then a copy of most recent results • S1 results if currently studying ND Maritime Studies (Navigation) or ND Mechanical Engineering If you would like to apply for a bursary, please contact Nomusa Moyo [email protected] and Elelwani Nemukula [email protected] What courses are offered by the School of Ports? There are currently 15 Marine Training programmes on offer at the School of Ports. The school plans to increase this to more than 20 programmes. They are: • Pilot Training Programme • Skipper Port Operations • Master Port Operations • General Purpose Rating • Global Marine Best Practice • VTS training programme • Marine Bursary Programme • Wiper • Dredge Master Training • Oiler • 2nd Engineer Port Operations • Chief Marine Engineering Port Operations • Berthing Master Training • Coxswain Training • Marine Shorehand Training There are 12 engineering training programmes currently on offer, with the view to increase these to 18. The current programmes are: • Port Engineering • Coastal Engineering • OBML • Engineers-in-training • Technicians-in-training • ABET-Science & Technology • High Voltage Training • OHS Act Training • APEC – Port Operations • APEC – Port Concessions • Port Tariffs • Port Planning There are also 13 other training and development initiatives. These will be increased to 24 in future: • Computer Training courses • SAMSA workshops • Training for Transnet Port Terminals, the Port Operator • Assessor Training • Moderator Training • Take a Girl Child to Work • Maritime Awareness at PDI Schools • Career Guidance workshops for schools • Computer courses • SAP Training • Project Management Training (PLP) • Port Engineers Forums • Harbour Masters’ Forums Most of our programmes are geared to long-distance learning that is guided by structured on the job training outlined in task books. These programmes include: • A national diploma in Maritime studies • A national diploma in Mechanical Marine Engineering • A structured cadet training programme, Skipper and Master Port Operations • An advisory service with practical training guidelines for Port marine disciplines such as Pilot and Marine Management
