The Scottish referendum debate: ‘Pain in the ass’ for hardliner Ethiopianists? ***************************************************** This coming Thursday, the five million Scottish people will vote YES or NO for the independence of their nation from UK’s 300 year old political marriage. The Catalonia in Spain are also holding similar referendum in November though the country’s constitutional court hasn’t endorsed it yet. In a society where pursuing politics is nothing but optimizing various interests, possibly through acceptable concessions, solving contentious points by letting the people to seal the deal with their vote is, more often than not, a way taken for granted. But for the hardliner Ethiopianist camp, whose concept of a ‘country’ is more about the land, the mountains, the rivers, the valleys, the gorges etc (don’t ask me a proof here, take a listen to their music which goes እምዬ ኢትዮጵያ ጋራ ሸንተረርሽ፣ ወንዝና ሸለቆሽ፣ ድንግል መሬትሽ….ምናምን ;) ) and less about the people inhabiting it, letting the people to decide on their matter is like “gambling with the sovereignty” of their እምዬ Ethiopia. On this, their iconic expression in Amharic vernacular goes “ውሃ ቀጠነ በማለት ህዝበ ውሳኔ ለሚፈልጉ “የዘውጌ” ቡድኖች ሁላ እሺ ብሎ መፍቀድ፣ በእምዬ ኢትዮጵያ ሉኣላዊነት ላይ ቁማር መጫወት ነው።” Here, I am not advocating secessionism or any ideological pursuits of such but only trying to show how backward and dangerously polarizing the political thoughts of these hardliner Ethiopianists are. Let alone in such a big, backward and complex empire as Ethiopia built on blood and bones of millions, we are witnessing that smaller and relatively developed countries like the United Kingdom, Belgium, Canada, Spain etc are not free from secessionist movements. In some countries like Canada, repeatedly holding referendum has been part of their political struggle over the past years that they coined the term “neverendum referendum” to show how the process may possibly extend even endless. So, dear Ethiopianist friends: arguing for “Unity” could surely be a good point…but remember that those who argue for “secession” could also have another good point. Learn to argue against their points instead of turning to insults and character assassination attempts that uniquely defines your socio-political engagements so far; as that way would only turns you into the camp of f** losers. Argue as to how not only you but also all others will equitably (not necessarily equally) be benefited from your proposals and accept that its the people who should have the final say, what ever it may be. Above all, learn how the mindful world solves its internal problems. Else, you are here to tell us only how astute and dangerously selfish you are!!
