The Senegal St. Joseph Gospel Choir performs at Earlham College on Tuesday as part of its first tour of the United States after more than four decades on the road in African and Europe. One free ticket is available with an Earlham ID. The 7:30 p.m. concert at Goddard Auditorium is one of just two stops in Indiana on the nationwide tour. Founded in 1950 by United Nations Ambassador Artist for Peace Julien Jouga in Dakar, Sengal, the 15-member choir and four Senegalese drummers perform traditional and spiritual Senegalese music, including gospel spirituals and traditional African songs. Now lead by Music Director Ambroise N’Diong, the choir still performs music composed by Jouga in Senegal’s four national languages: Ouolof, Diola, Sérère and Portugese Creole. The group interprets and combines both the Catholic liturgy and the indigenous Muslims songs of Senegal to create an extraordinary harmony between the two cultures that comprise Senegal.
