The Simpsons: best musical guests In 2000, The Simpsons featured British rock band The Who making guest voice appearances as themselves. Jackson Browne says its fun to be parodied as a music guest on The Simpsons, a show that also featured Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber Music is one of the key elements of The Simpsons, from the parody songs (remember You Don’t Win Friends With Salad?), to the guest musicians and the use of a full live orchestra. Its something of a rarity in modern television production. Some of the worlds most famous musicians – including former Beatles star Paul McCartney, Elton John, James Brown, Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton and Justin Bieber – have had guest slots, but the best musical episodes have tended to be the quirkier ones. One such show was Brake My Wife, Please, the 20th episode of the 14th season in 2003, which featured an animated Jackson Brownevoiced by the singer. Im here to serenade you with a song,Browne told Homer and the crowd assembled at a backyard barbecue in Marges honour. The people all cheered loudly. From my latest album . . . Browne added, and they all sighed loudly. Just kidding . . . here is one of my many classics, Browne added, before launching into a rewritten version of his 1977 song Rosie, performed as a duet with Homer, with the words Marge, youre alright. When Browne was over in the UK for his recent tour, I asked him what it was liked to be parodied on The Simpsons. I love The Simpsons and was happy to be asked because I am a fan, Browne replied. Who doesnt love The Simpsons? They were definitely poking fun at me, that is part of the thrill to see them take you apart. Believe it or not, that really is part of the fun. I had kids come up to me after the show and say youre that guy on The Simpsons, I cant wait to hear you play. I am sort of a lapsed Simpsons fan now. There was a time when I would watch them during the making of a record and we would time the food to arrive so we could watch and eat while they were on. As well as Brownes performance, here are five other classic musical guest episodes: 1: MICHAEL JACKSON Michael Jackson: Hi, Im Michael Jackson from the Jacksons. Homer: Im Homer Simpson from The Simpsons. The dialogue was snappy and Jackson, who was a big fan of Bart Simpson and wrote a song for the episode, played along well. 2: THE WHO The British rockers arrived in Springfield when a wall was built to divide the rich and poor of the town. The highlight was Roger Daltrey calling for a Who huddle! 3: GEORGE HARRISON The Simpsons creator Matt Groening is a big fan of the Beatles and they neatly spoofed the career of the Fab Four by telling the story of Homer’s rise to fame as part of a Barbershop Quartet. The episode was capped by a cameo appearance by George Harrison. 4: JOHNNY CASH When Homer tripped out on Guatemalan insanity peppers, who better to voice the talking Space Coyote than Man in Black Johnny Cash? 5: TITO PUENTE Composer Alf Clausen, who has scored more than 500 episodes of The Simpsons, says his favourite musical guest was the late Latin-American jazz musician and bandleader Tito Puente, who became a music teacher at Springfield Elementary School for a brief time when he was ready to give up the drudgery of the professional mambo circuit and settle into a nice teaching job. Puente and his Latin Jazz Ensemble performed the song Señor Burns after the musician became a suspect in the attempted murder of Mister Burns. A truly fun guest performance.
