The Smile ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) reported - TopicsExpress

The Smile ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger ﷺ returned from a funeral at the al-Baqīʿe cemetery late one night, to find her having a headache, He [came to me and] found me experiencing a headache While holding her head in pain, ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) said, What a headache! What a headache! Instead, I am experiencing a severe headache. After mentioning his severe headache, the Messenger ﷺ and ʿĀʾishah started musing upon whom between the two of them would be the first to pass away and what the remaining spouse would do in the absence of the other half. This is a common topic for most couples, where the women generally say, “Yes, I’ll probably die first, then finally you will get married to the woman you really wanted”. The discussion between the noble couple also went in a similar direction. The Messenger ﷺ told ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) that she would have a great consolation if she were the first to pass away. Allāh’s Prophet ﷺ would arrange the ghusl (funeral bathing), and facilitate the shrouding. He ﷺ would then perform her funeral prayer and personally see her lowered into the grave. I will personally perform the ghusl, shroud you, lead your funeral prayer and complete the burial. Just as any woman would be curious to know, ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) enquired the Prophet ﷺ as to what he would do after he had buried her. ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) said, “Let me tell you what you will do”, By Allāh you will [probably] come to my house and become intimate with one of your other wives. Now look at the composure of the Messenger ﷺ. He did not rebuke her or scold her. Instead he defused the situation with a smile. The Messenger ﷺ smiled. The Messenger ﷺ only answered this apparent provocation with respect, by simply smiling at ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her). He understood that ʿĀʾishah’s question stemmed from her emotional attachment. His response showed the utmost consideration for her feelings at this delicate moment. After all, the curve of a smile can set a lot of things straight. In fact, more than often, a warm smile can thaw an icy stare. - Echoes From the Cave
