The Smiley Tillmon Band made their Macs on Slade debut last night in Palatine and it was a great time musically and otherwise. Smiley is a real ambassador for the blues dispensing humor and little gems of wisdom along with authentic South Side blues and R&B. Like a number of mature blues players, Smiley was active playing at one time and then went quiet for a number of years while working a day job to support himself. Now hes come back with one of his best outfits ever according to his longtime bass player Tom. My friend and guitarist Kate Moss trades leads with Smiley and solos impressively on a very accessible set list of blues standards guaranteed to win over even the most hardened cynic. And theres fewer jokes now about her sharing a name with the famous Brit model cause really our Chicago Kate is the one rockin our world these days, not the other. There was a good sized and enthusiastic crowd at Macs last night so its unlikely to be the last time they appear in Palatine. Great to see Mac and Sue, Dan, Sonya, Bobby and the other Macs on Slade mainstays plus friends Frank, Erin, Lara, Debbie, Blues Kathy, Melissa, Tracey and others. Great music and good friends....its not everything but pretty darn close.
