The Smithfield neighborhood school is rich in history, and changes -- such as the recent demolition of its old building, erected in 1927... Parker opened its doors as Industrial High School in 1899. For decades it was the only high school for black students in Birmingham and at one time was the largest high school for blacks in the world, with nearly 4,000 students enrolled in 1947.
