The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi was named one of the world’s 100 best hotels on Wednesday by Fodor, a New York-based publisher of travel and tourism information. The hotel is among 11 establishments across the globe to win the Enduring Classics category of Fodor’s 100 Hotel Awards aiming at recognizing the most incredible hotels in the world. Five hundred Fodor contributors reviewed more than 5,000 hotels and assessed their service, setting, style, and amenities for the publishing of this year’s list. “A classic Asian colonial-era hotel in the same league as the Peninsula in Hong Kong and Singapore’s Raffles Hotel, the Metropole is Hanoi’s most storied accommodation, offering world-class service in a historic building nestled in the French Quarter across from the Hanoi Opera House. The hotel’s Metropole Wing preserves the original French colonial aesthetic, which is contrasted by the Opera Wing’s neoclassical decor,” Fodor described the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi on its website. “Guests in both wings have easy access to the picture-perfect street-side café, one of Hanoi’s most inviting swimming pools, and even daily tours to the hotel’s wartime bomb shelter, where you can learn about the city’s history. Artifacts, including room keys dating back to 1901, are on display in the lobby,” it added. Other winners of the category include the Mandarin Oriental in Thailand, the Savoy in England, and the Taj Mahal Palace in India. Winners of other categories are England’s Convent Garden Hotel, Brazil’s Ananvilhanas Jungle Lodge, the U.S.’s Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas, and Costa Rica’s Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, to name but a few. Built in 1901, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has received a number of recognitions, including that from U.S.-based Conde Nast magazine whose readers chose it as one of the top 500 hotels in the world in 2013. Last October, the bomb shelter of the hotel was presented with an Honorable Mention at the 2013 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation ceremony.
