The Solar Floating Island is a self-sufficient holiday resort Responding to the threat of rising sea levels due to climate change, Italian designer Michele Puzzolante of MPD Designs has come up with a concept called the Solar Floating Island, a solar-powered island resort that floats completely off-shore. Made of photovoltaic skins and balsa-reinforced fibreglass, the floating structure is designed to absorb and reuse natural solar light as well as artificial indoor light, making the resort completely self-sufficient and non-polluting. As well as being super eco-friendly, the concept is a luxurious aquatic escape for the discerning traveller. Featuring on-deck jacuzzi, fully fitted kitchen and bar, comfortable sleeping quarters, and a spiral staircase that leads to an underwater observation room, the Solar Floating Island is designed to provide a full resort experience without losing its close proximity to nature and aquatic life. Based on industrial design rather than traditional architecture, the Solar Floating Island can be easily transported and assembled thanks to its modular components. Whats even more interesting is that the project has full support from the government of Maldives, so expect to see Puzzolante turning his ideas into reality very soon.
