The Sopranos started filming in HD with season 3. The Blu-ray box set I bought this week really steps up its game with the third season. Prior to that it had been shot on regular 35 mm film stock. Its amazing how these digital achievements can be stored away on drives for 100 years, opened up and look as good as the day they were made compared to 20th century celluloid film that had to be renewed every 20-30 years. The major studios are working on all of their film stock from the 20th century and digitizing them. It will take about 30 more years to have it all done but the power of cinema will enrich the world for centuries after that. There were about 40,000 feature films released in the 20th century. A lengthy task that will pay big dividends in the end. Here is a short documentary worth watching that will give you an idea of how the process is done. It is one of the best looking films ever restored digitally.
