The Soul Exits The Body In One Of Two Ways KNOWLEDGE FROM THE KATHA UPANISHAD Shatam chai’kaa cha hridayasya naadyah Taasaam moordhaanam abhi-nih-sritai’kaa Tayo’rdhwam aayann amritatwam eti Vishwang anyaa ut-kramane bhawanti – [Katha Upanishad 2:3:16] One hundred and one Channels exist in the heart. One of them extends towards the crown of the head. When a Soul, at the time of death, exits the body by passing up and out through this Channel, It attains Emancipation. In exiting the body through other Channels, the Soul is reborn in different wombs. [Yogis recognize the presence of a Subtle Nerve in the body, called Sushum-naa Naadee, or the Most Gracious Channel. Some Scholars say that it is the Carotid Nerve, located at the Center of the Spinal Column, between two lesser Channels called Idaa and Pingalaa, the former on the left and the latter on the right. The Sushum-naa Naadee is the central conduit through which life-force flows from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. This verse is saying that when, at the time of death, the Soul passes through the Sushum-naa and exits the body through the Divine Opening in the crown of the head, that Soul is never subject to rebirth – that Soul has achieved Emancipation. This opening in the head is called Brahma-randhra, or the Opening leading to God. It remains closed in the case of people with undeveloped minds, and opens only for the advanced Soul ready to pass on into the State of Emancipation. Souls with undeveloped minds, not ready for Emancipation, exit the body through eyes, ears, nostrils and other body openings.]
